CHEM 104 Fundamentals of Organic and Biochemistry

Course topics include: nomenclature, physical properties, and structure of compounds such as alkanes, alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids, aldehydes, and ketones. The major organic biomolecules such as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids, including their function in cells and tissues, will be studied. The laboratory component will develop skills necessary to analyze organic compounds and to learn experimental procedures in biochemistry including chromatography, enzyme assays, and protein characterization.

Course Objectives

  1. Design and perform chemistry experiment(s) to apply theoretical concepts acquired in lecture to laboratory experiments and to know and observe all safety rules
  2. Analyze and interpret data collected in the laboratory.
  3. Explain the structure and bonding of carbon in organic molecules and identify different families of organic compounds.
  4. Construct names of compounds using the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) system.
  5. Identify biomolecules such as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids and discuss their role in metabolism and energy production.
  6. Apply problem-solving skills which would provide the proper framework to begin the study of organic chemistry and biochemistry.
