DANC 113 Music Concepts for Dance

This course will provide students with an understanding of how music is notated and structured in relation to dance. Students will learn fundamental musical tools essential for dance performance, teaching, and choreography. The course will provide a historical context by surveying the shifts in music from the Medieval period through the 21st century.  Through this process students can learn and integrate language and knowledge to effectively communicate their musical needs with musicians.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and apply knowledge of rhythmic notation, dynamics, and tempo to develop more articulate movement skills.
  2. Explore the relationship between music and dance by generating movement ideas from various musical styles.
  3. Analyze and evaluate questions related to the confluence of creative expression in dance as it is influenced by various musical styles.
  4. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods by developing the ability to choreograph dance within the structures of various musical styles.
