DMSU 242 Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate Program Externship II

This course provides an observation of the clinical duties performed in an ultrasound department as well as basic instruction and scanning experience in abdominal, obstetrical, gynecological, small parts, vascular, echocardiography, and/or other aspects of sonography. Attendance at an assigned clinical affiliate is required. This course is required to complete the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate program.

DMSU 241 with a grade of B or higher. Pre- or corequisites: DMSU 181 with a grade of C or higher and DMSU 282 with a grade of C or higher

Course Objectives

  1. Prepare the patient for the sonographic examination based upon the appropriate specialty.
  2. Prepare the exam room for the sonographic examination based upon the appropriate specialty.
  3. Use proper technique to perform the sonographic examination of appropriate specialty.
  4. Recognize normal and abnormal echogenicity of tissue structures.
  5. Identify and describe spatial relations on an ultrasound image.
  6. Select the proper equipment settings for the exam and patient body habitus.
  7. Employ proper techniques for image optimization using the examination instruments.
  8. Demonstrate scanning according to accepted protocols.
  9. Analyze physician orders, patient history, and clinical presentations to identify areas of interest.
  10. Demonstrate appropriate patient care skills.
  11. Demonstrate professional demeanor and interactions appropriate to the clinical setting.
