EDUC 201 Processes and Acquisition of Reading

This course develops an understanding of the reading acquisition process through analysis of reading and written language development and the study of current issues in reading research. It is organized around current, scientific, research-based theoretical models that account for individual differences in reading. Introduction to language structures including spoken syllables, phonemes, graphemes, and morphemes is included in this course. Participants will apply knowledge of the core areas of language to reading acquisition in terms of first and second language acquisition, typical development and exceptionalities. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Reading requirement for initial certification or renewal of a certificate in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Special Education Generic Infant/Primary, and Special Education Generic Elementary/Middle.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe and recognize phases of the reading acquisition process to include the progressive development of phonological and orthographic skills, word recognition, fluency, and comprehension from preschool through mature reading.
  2. Identify intrinsic/extrinsic, alterable, and unalterable variables and their contribution to reading acquisition.
  3. Describe the contributions of neuroscience to understanding how children learn to read.
  4. Explain the effects an exceptional condition, such as dyslexia, or other reading difficulties can have on an individual's learning to read and write.
  5. Apply knowledge of language structure and organization to understand the reading and writing processes of children.
  6. Analyze the essential connections between language development, reading acquisition, and writing.
  7. Discuss the relationship between language proficiency and reading proficiency, the influence of language differences on the reading and writing processes of children, and the development of writing and its relationship to reading.
  8. Summarize scientifically-based research that has identified how primary language and culture interact with individual differences, culture, and experience to impact academic and social abilities, attitudes, values, and interests related to the reading acquisition process.
  9. Describe the relationship between family literacy and the reading and writing processes of children.
  10. Access, evaluate, process, and apply information efficiently and effectively.
  11. Use technology to communicate information in a variety of formats.
