EDUC 266 Methods of Teaching Early Childhood and Elementary Education

This course prepares prospective and non-certified early childhood and elementary school teachers to become reflective educators in a diverse society through knowledge of the subject matter, the curriculum, the learners, and teaching strategies. Opportunities will be provided for planning and practicing instruction based on a knowledge of theory and research supporting the strategies and models used. Emphasis will be placed upon reflection on teaching and learning events in classrooms and schools to encourage problem solving in collaboration with others. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Teaching Methodology requirement for an initial certificate in Early Childhood or Elementary Education.

Course Objectives

  1. Discuss the major strategies teachers can use for motivating students and for building productive learning communities that focus on student engagement and achievement and create an effective classroom culture.
  2. Evaluate and describe how teachers can best implement strategies to support the differentiated classroom as they impact student learning in culturally diverse classrooms (e.g., gender differences, low-SES students, ethnicity, etc).
  3. Explain how to use multiple models of instruction and instructional strategies to accomplish particular learning goals and to meet the needs of all learners.
  4. Develop a set of definitions, guidelines, and procedures governing the teaching-learning process and serving as a basis for planning, assessment, management, and decision-making.
  5. Construct overarching guidelines and principles governing the design and implementation of assessment and grading.
  6. Reflect upon topics related to the teaching-learning process, with attention to planning, implementation, management, and assessment.
  7. Explain the relationship of current research to best teaching practices.
