EDUC 290 Special Education General Methods Birth-12th Grade

Students will understand and use a variety of classroom methods and strategies appropriate for children and adolescents from birth through 12th grade. The course will focus on effective practices in different settings with all disability groups, as well as collaboration with other involved professionals and parents. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Curriculum and Methodology of Instruction requirement for an initial certificate in Generic Special Education Infant/Primary, Elementary/Middle School, and Secondary/Adult.

  1. Understand and explain laws and current practices pertaining to the education of students with special needs.
  2. Understand, explain, and demonstrate instructional methods, strategies, and accommodations and modifications for students with special needs.
  3. Identify and describe appropriate strategies and interventions for content area skills for students with special needs.
  4. List and define special education service models for students with special needs.
  5. Describe methods of managing the learning and classroom environment for students with special needs.
  6. Understand and describe the IFSP/IEP goal development process for students with special needs.
  7. Explain the process of and strategies for transition to elementary, middle, high school, and post-secondary life.
  8. Identify and describe how to plan and collaborate with families and other professionals when working with students with special needs.
