ENGL 090 Academic Reading and Writing

This course is designed to teach students the academic literacy skills required for college-level coursework. Students will read college-level texts, exercise a variety of comprehension strategies, and write for academic purposes. Emphasis will be placed on interpreting and summarizing reading selections and composing thoughtful responses through various writing exercises.

Course Objectives

  1. Apply metacognition and critical thinking strategies to complete reading and writing tasks.
  2. Examine basic rhetorical concepts such as the correlation between writer, audience, and purpose.
  3. Implement the reading process, including pre-reading strategies, active reading, textual annotations, and inferences based on information from the text.
  4. Implement the writing process, including pre-writing, drafting, and revising.
  5. Interpret and summarize a variety of academic reading selections.
  6. Compose written responses to reading selections using a variety of college-level vocabulary.
  7. Make connections between reading and writing by finding, using, and referencing specific, relevant textual evidence to support ideas.
  8. Write grammatically correct sentences.
