ENGL 126 Introduction to Journalism

This course will introduce a framework for practicing journalism in the twenty-first century. Students will discuss the role and responsibility of the press in a free society; they will read and evaluate various newspapers' style and content; and students will practice journalistic writing and editing, using the professional standards of gathering information for news, features, and opinion pieces. Thus, students will read and watch the news nightly and write daily, implementing the writing process, from research, interviewing, and note taking through editing, proofreading, and potential publication. Students enrolled in this course should expect to participate inside and outside of the class.

Course Objectives

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the history of media and the economic, social, and technological influences on the profession of journalism.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of journalistic professionals (i.e. reporters, editors, and publishers in print and digital media).
3. Analyze print, broadcast, and social media for its purpose, news value, and judgment.
4. Produce ethical, accurate, concise, fair, and diverse articles for publication in print and/or online outlets.
5. Apply strategies of inquiry and exploration through a variety of news-gathering techniques.
