HIST 123 Western Civilization and the Modern World

This course examines the history and development of Western Civilization and its impact on the world during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The student will identify and analyze the political, economic, and intellectual movements that influenced Western Europe and the United States. The student will evaluate events and trends that have shaped the modern world, including the two World Wars, the Cold War, and the rise and fall of European empires in Africa and Asia. The course will highlight the role of Europe and the United States in shaping modern global political and economic structures.

  1. Describe an issue in the history of modern western civilization and its legacy from a global perspective.
  2. Discuss how human experience in the history of modern western civilization is shaped by global forces.
  3. Analyze the interconnectedness of global events in the context of in the history of modern western civilization.
  4. Analyze and evaluate the ways in which modern western civilization informs the political, cultural, and/or social issues of the modern world.
  5. Identify one's core belief(s) after examining the ethical concerns and alternative ethical perspectives relating to a historical issue.
  6. Compose an effective narrative that describes and analyzes the history of modern western civilization in response to an analytical question.
