HUMN 223 Cultures of Asia

This course will explore topics such as the concept of Asia, the geography, art, and cultural heritage of Asian countries, the ways in which Asia has been viewed in popular culture and academic scholarship, and contemporary Asian cultures. Asian cultures explored in this course include: East Asia (China Japan, Mongolia, Taiwan, North and South Korea), South Asia (Afghanistan, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Tibet, Sri Lanka), South East Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, East Timor), and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan).

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to enduring and contemporary issues of Asian cultural aesthetics, creativity, and the human search for meaning.
  2. Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and consider alternatives on a variety of subjects within and across the cultures of Asia, including the ways in which Asia has been viewed in popular culture, academic scholarship, and contemporary Asian cultures.
  3. Research, analyze, and evaluate Asian arts and cultures, including Asian contributions to the arts in literature, visual arts, music, and theater.
  4. Apply ideas about creative and humanistic expression in Asia to a variety of social and cultural contexts.
  5. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences in ancient and modern languages spoken in Asia.
