MUSA 107 Music Technology in Society

Previously MUSC 145. From pop music played by a toothbrush, to medieval chants used as cell phone ring tones, to orchestral pieces written to accompany video games, music is embedded in more aspects of people's day-to-day lives than ever before. This course, which is open to all interested students, will examine the use of technology in the creation and presentation of music through history and especially in today's world. Students will participate in the creation of music and sound projects, but are not required to have a music or technology background.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and apply theories and concepts related to creativity and invention by designing music and sound to fit specific situations and projects.
  2. Demonstrate effective use of technological tools by presenting musical works using a technology-based delivery system.
  3. Demonstrate how technology is used to create and present music.
  4. Generate ideas, explore possibilities and consider alternatives, demonstrating knowledge of the uses of music in today’s society and the fundamental role technology plays.
  5. Select the appropriate tool to accomplish tasks which identify elements of technology in music throughout history.
  6. Analyze and evaluate ideas or outcomes, discussing topics using vocabulary and concepts from the music technology field.
  7. Judge the relevance of the application of specific technologies to music creation and presentation.
  8. Identify technology-based music creation and presentation techniques through listening and research.
  9. Use music technology tools to improve critical listening skills, and apply the information and ideas to other contexts.
  10. Communicate and collaborate through the use of technology, finding and using Internet-based music, sound creation resources, and discussion boards.
  11. Demonstrate a basic understanding of copyright law and the implications for creation of original music and sound.
