PSYC 101 General Psychology

Through this introduction to psychology, students will develop an understanding of the basic principles of psychology and be able to apply these principles to psychological problems and their own experiences. Students will be able to describe how psychologists do their research and understand how psychologists explain phenomena. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize, analyze, and critically evaluate psychological information.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify, summarize, analyze, and critically evaluate psychological information, including primary and secondary sources.
  2. Describe, understand, analyze, and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of psychological research.
  3. Explain, analyze, and evaluate psychological concepts by critically applying the scientific method.
  4. Apply psychological concepts and theories to the human experience including one’s own, both in and out the classroom.
  5. Explain the influences and limitations on mental process and behavior.
  6. Compare and contrast the various influences on mental health.
  7. Compare, contrast, and apply the major perspectives in psychology.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues and social responsibility in psychology.
  9. Write clearly and effectively using appropriate, relevant, and properly attributed content that demonstrates the writer's understanding of psychological thinking.
  10. Apply appropriate strategies of inquiry and exploration in order to find, evaluate, and use information ethically in the study of an issue in psychology.
