This curriculum is designed as a guide for students planning to transfer to a four-year institution that offers a bachelor’s degree in Music (Music Education, Performance, Musicology, Music Theory, Composition, or Jazz/Commercial Music). Students are advised to check the requirements of the institution to which they intend to transfer. The goal of the music area of concentration is to produce well-rounded musicians with demonstrable excellence in core musical knowledge, solo performance, and collaborative musicianship. Music majors are required to meet with a music faculty advisor in the music department for advising and assessment before registering.

A graduate should be able to

  1. Identify, understand, evaluate, and apply ethical reasoning as it applies to the field of Music.
  2. Demonstrate self-confidence, motivation, intellectual curiosity, and open-mindedness.
  3. Demonstrate National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) standards of musical performance (through applied music studies, ensembles, and master classes), as well as demonstrate ability in self-assessment and devise practicing strategy.
  4. Demonstrate competency through application of knowledge learned in content-based areas of music theory and music literature, and in skill-based areas of ear training/sight singing and keyboard proficiency.

Total Credit Hours: 64

Major Ensembles at HCC include HCC Chorus, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, the Columbia Concert Band, and the Columbia Orchestra. All other ensembles are considered to be secondary or minor ensembles.
