vi. Non-voting Faculty Members
The MGH Institute offers non-voting faculty privileges to qualified people in one of three ways:
1. Key academic leaders at the MGH Institute
2. Key leaders in major affiliates
3. Adjunct faculty members
Type I: Key academic leaders at the Institute
Academic leaders of the MGH Institute are recognized as leaders in their academic discipline, are appointed to the faculty in their respective departments, and, as members of the administration, they are non-voting members of the faculty. These include the president, provost, associate provosts, and deans.
Type II: Key leaders in major affiliates
Similarly, key leaders at major clinical/academic affiliates (MGH, BWH, and SRH) are eligible to serve as non-voting affiliate faculty. Appointments as affiliate faculty at the level of assistant, associate, or professor, may continue as long as the person serves in his or her position in that MassGeneral Brigham institution. These faculty titles are offered without compensation, although individuals may be compensated for specific teaching responsibilities, such as teaching a course.
Key leaders include those in positions such as directors, vice presidents, or above, who serve as leaders in disciplines for which the MGH Institute has academic programs or for those in related disciplines with which the MGH Institute has a collaborative interest or relationship.
The expectations associated with these non-voting positions, which are not considered adjunct faculty, include:
• promoting the MGH Institute and its programs to colleagues and the community
• creating a collaborative environment that fosters a close and formal relationship between the MGH Institute and the clinical institution to further the mission and goals of both organizations
• supporting clinical education priorities
• participating in MGH Institute events
• serving as liaison between the MGH Institute and their own institutional programs, employees, and department
• participating in annual planning meetings or other periodic conferences or meetings with MGH Institute administration
• identifying opportunities for shared projects for scholarship, research, and service
Examples of those positions eligible for these affiliated appointments to the faculty include:
• president
• vice presidents and/or chief nursing officer
• director of physical therapy
• director of occupational therapy
• director of speech-language pathology
• directors of educational and research programs in the affiliated institution
• chairs of academic programs within the institutions
Type III: Adjunct Faculty Members
Qualified individuals who play an ongoing role in the academic life of a program or school and who are not in a senior leadership role in their home institution and who wish to be affiliated with the faculty of the MGH Institute may be considered for appointment as adjunct faculty. They are appointed at the recommendation of the dean of the school in which the program resides. Adjunct faculty members are not compensated for their work, unless they are also serving as a term lecturer for a specific course.
