SEC502 Introduction to Teaching at the Secondary Level

Introduction to teaching in the secondary school. Course includes issues and trends affecting teaching at the secondary level: adolescent development, multicultural perspectives, curriculum development and integration, community building and maintenance, and constructing disciplinary knowledge. With attention paid to reform mandates and assessments, a variety of instructional models will be discussed, critiqued and practiced. Beyond assigned readings and class sessions, this course requires a clinical experience of at least 35 observation hours. Clinical experiences will involve multicultural settings and working with students with special needs. Prerequisite(s): none 3 semester hours

SEC510 Teaching Biology in the Secondary Level

This course, intended for students preparing to be certified secondary school teachers, addresses the content and discipline of Biology as it pertains to general goals of secondary education. Pedagogical content knowledge, materials, instructional issues and methods will be developed to enhance students' ability to teach Biology to secondary school students. 3 semester hours

SEC512 Teaching English in the Secondary Level

This course, intended for students preparing to be certified secondary school teachers, addresses the content and discipline of English as it pertains to general goals of secondary education. Pedagogical content knowledge, materials, instructional issues and methods will be developed to enhance students' ability to teach English to secondary school students. Beyond assigned readings and class sessions, this course requires a clinical experience of at least 50 contact hours. Clinical experiences will involve multicultural settings and working with students with special needs. Prerequisite(s): A grade of B or better in SEC502 3 semester hours

SEC514 TeachingMath in the Secondary Level

This course builds upon general methods of teaching high school through an in-depth focus on the curriculum, methods, materials, and issues involved in teaching mathematics. The course seeks to help students bridge their mathematical content knowledge with the mathematics of the 9-12 curriculum. The purpose is to help future teachers develop a teaching style that will communicate mathematical concepts, problem solving and a positive disposition towards mathematics to their secondary students. Prerequisite(s): A grade of B or better in SEC502 3 semester hours

SEC516 Teaching Physical Science in the Secondary Level

This course, intended for students preparing to be certified secondary school teachers, addresses the content and discipline of Physical Science as it pertains to general goals of secondary education. Pedagogical content knowledge, materials, instructional issues and methods will be developed to enhance students' ability to teach Physical Science to secondary school students. 3 semester hours

SEC518 Teaching Social Studies in the Secondary Level

This course, intended for students preparing to be certified secondary school teachers, addresses the content and discipline of Social Studies as it pertains to general goals of secondary education. Pedagogical content knowledge, materials, instructional issues and methods will be developed to enhance students' ability to teach Social Studies to secondary school students. Beyond assigned readings and class sessions, this course requires a clinical experience of at least 50 contact hours. SEC522 Classical Language Methodology

This course, intended for students preparing to be certified as secondary school teachers (middle school and high school), addresses the content, approach and methodology of Latin teaching as it pertains to the National Standards for the Teaching of Classical Language. The primary focus is to combine the findings of modern linguistic theory with that of current reading theory to construct a teaching framework for facilitating the development of syntactic and reading expertise in a learner-centered environment. 3 semester hours

SEC524 Communicative Language Teaching in the Foreign Language Classroom

This modern foreign language methods course is designed for M.A.T. students who intend to teach foreign language(s) to secondary and/or middle school students. Participants will learn how to use implications of current second language (L2) acquisition theory to foster a learner-centered classroom in which the L2 is the primary language of communicative competence- the ability to express, interpret and negotiate meaning - and will learn how to use performance-based assessment of communicative and written competencies to drive curriculum and instruction. 3 semester hours

SEC525 American Urban Education

This course will explore how race, ethnicity, culture, class, and gender affect access to, and quality in, education. It will examine the past and present educational experiences of people of various cultural backgrounds in an effort to understand the context of their current sociopolitical realities and how those realities affect the educational process. Strategies for teaching in a culturally diverse society and creating multicultural curriculum will be explored. Prerequisite(s): none 3-4 semester hours (consult department)

SEC532 Foundations of Communicative Language Teaching

The Communicative Approach has evolved to become one of the most significant and effective approaches for teaching students how to communicate in a non-native language. Students will explore the evolution of the Communicative Approach from a historical perspective of language teaching in the United States. They will examine the theoretical rationale, principals and methods for implementing the Communicative Approach. The course will entail ongoing experimenting and research in their own classrooms and peer teaching of CL techniques in the course. Prerequisite(s): Candidates hold a valid teaching certificate of a world language and demonstrate proof of at least an Advanced score on the ACTFL oral proficiency interview exam in the language they teach. Certified teachers may request permission of the instructor to substitute a letter from their Department stating the candidate's language competency equivalent to the Advanced ACTFL OPI score in lieu of an official ACTFL score. 2-5 semester hours

SEC533 The Intersection of Cross Cultural Communication and Foreign Language Teaching

This course represents the intersection of the field of cross cultural communication with foreign language teaching. Cross cultural communication studies provide vital concepts, skills and techniques to offer foreign language teachers as they develop their Standards-based curricula. The course enables participants to introduce and develop intercultural competence in their middle and secondary school classrooms via authentic communication challenges. Prerequisite(s): Candidates hold a valid teaching certificate of a world language and demonstrate proof of at least an Advanced score on the ACTFL oral proficiency interview exam in the language they teach. Current M.A.T. teacher candidates enrolled in the Secondary Education program are eligible as well. Certified teachers may request permission of the instructor to substitute a letter from their Department Chairperson stating the candidate's language competency equivalent to the Advanced ACTFL OPI score in lieu of an official ACTFL score. 3 semester hours

SEC569 Portfolio Development for Subsequent Certification

This is the initial course designed for teachers currently certified in Illinois who wish to secure a subsequent Illinois certificate in early childhood education; elementary education; secondary education for science; social sciences, English language arts, or mathematics; special education for LBS-I; or K-12 foreign language. A portfolio documenting knowledge and experiences encompassing the certification standards for the certificate being sought will be created. This course is required for all candidates seeking subsequent certificates through the focused program. Prerequisite(s): Valid Illinois certificate 4 semester hours

SEC575 Subsequent Certification Practicum

This course is designed for teachers currently in Illinois who wish to secure a subsequent Illinois certificate in secondary education for science, social science, English language arts, mathematics, or foreign language. The candidate will required to complete between 75 and 150 hours in a classroom setting that is represented in the subsequent certificate. The candidate will also meet for seminar with a faculty member in the subsequent certificate area. Enrollment in this class requires advance application and approval. 3-6 semester hours Prerequisite(s): SEC569 Completion of all content coursework as described on the transcript assessment. Completion of individualized program of study as determined by initial portfolio review. Application for placement with preclinical review of portfolio. Passing score on Illinois Test of Basic Skills on file at NCE. Passing score on Illinois Subject Area Test for the subsequent certification on file at NCE. Current TB Test. Current Criminal Background Check.

SEC590F Student Teaching Secondary Education Foreign Language

This field-based experience is required of all students seeking professional certification as a secondary school foreign language teacher. Student teaching offers supervised opportunities to develop and refine teaching skills in a secondary school or a middle school. All candidates will have clinical experience with diverse student populations prior to and during student teaching. A minimum of 10 weeks of full-day student teaching is required. The dates of student teaching depend on the school placement. In addition, a Cluster and/or content area seminar will meet for a minimum of five sessions during the quarter. The National College of Education makes all placements. 6 semester hours

SEC592A Secondary Education Alternative Certification: Internship for the Biological Sciences

This seminar is required for alternatively certified teachers. This internship offers opportunities to develop and refine teaching skills in a secondary school. The seminar provides the student-practitioners an opportunity to describe and reflect upon their knowledge, skills, and dispositions for teaching; to evaluate and integrate theory and practice; to examine implications of practice for themselves, students and community in the biological sciences. Students enroll in seminar for three semester hours for three consecutive terms (for a total of nine semester hours) during their first year of teaching. Grades are given for each term. Prerequisite(s): The student-practitioner must be working as an alternatively certified secondary school teacher through National Louis University. 3 semester hours. May be repeated up to a maximum of 9 semester hours.

SEC594 Independent Study/Secondary Education

The purpose of this independent study in Secondary Education is to provide students with the opportunity to investigate in depth a topic, problem, or relevant issue. This course is designed in conjunction with a faculty member leading the independent study. The topic should be of relevance to their individual goals and professional aspirations as a secondary level educator. Prerequisite(s): This course should be taken after secondary education certification with approval of advisor, instructor, department chair and dean. 1-3 semester hours

This year long residency student teaching is an opportunity for students to explore and grow in curriculum and pedagogy, but also to become more fully enculturated into the life of the school where they have the experience. Community and collegiality are built during monthly seminar meetings and extended working relationships with cooperating teachers. This community will sustain students as they continue through the completion of the secondary education program, and provide a professional network of support when they enter the profession. Prerequisite(s): Prior to entering the Resident Student Teaching experience, students must complete the Illinois State Test of Basic Skills, the related Subject area exam, and meet all other requirements for admission to the Secondary Education department as specified.
