INV 100 What is Innovation?

A contextual inquiry and qualitative research into the definition of innovation at University of Portland. Students will be introduced to open ended methods of design ethnography and qualitative research to explore creative modes of community engagement to determine the shifting and contextual definitions of innovation. The course culminates in the presentation of a documented process and a report of their findings.

INV 200 Introduction to Design and Innovation

Innovation embodies the synthesis of sensemaking and changemaking in the pursuit of solving problems or imagining new futures. Through theoretical analysis and hands-on projects, this course introduces creative problem-solving frameworks and methods applicable to an array of contexts, the ethics of innovation, the characteristics of an innovator, and the depth of craft in the practices of innovation.

INV 300 Ethnography, Co-Creation, Usability

Innovation is seeking to understand and make connections between humans and the complexity of situations. This course uncovers how ethnography, co-creation, and usability play role in shaping ideas. Understanding theory is integrated with fieldwork and simulations in how epistemology and methodology are applied in various contexts; and to gain experience in planning and facilitating investigations.

INV 350 Critical Making, Sketching, and Prototyping

Innovation is made tangible through making. Making is the most powerful way that we solve problems, imagine new futures, and shape our world. Students are challenged to grapple with emerging technologies that introduce new affordances, ethical constraints, and unpredictable results coupled with using software, tools, materials, and machines such as laser cutters, 3D printers, low voltage electronics, and micro-controllers. Fee: $100

INV 400 Industry Sponsored Innovation Practicum

Innovation embodies the synthesis of sensemaking and changemaking in the pursuit of solving problems and imagining new futures. This practicum allows students to collaboratively demonstrate the innovative mindset, bring forth the depth of knowledge from their major area of study, all wrapped in a service-oriented context of an industry sponsored challenge. Fee: $100
