General Education Competencies
Vision Statement
The General Education component of the community college experience develops the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary for a lifetime of inquiry, discovery, and responsible citizenship.
General Education Competencies
Students of Western Piedmont Community College attain the following competencies:
I. Communication Skills
Students will be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise and well organized manner with different audiences by reading, comprehending, writing, speaking, and listening.
II. Critical Thinking and Quantitative Reasoning
Students will be able to distinguish among opinions, facts, and inferences; identify underlying or implicit assumptions; synthesize information; apply fundamental mathematical concepts; and, solve problems by applying evaluative standards.
III. Interpersonal Skills and Human Relations
Students will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the individual self and their relationship to others in various contexts.
IV. Understanding Culture and Society
Students will be able to understand themselves and the world around them through the study of the content and methods used in the humanities and the social sciences toward understanding the diversities and complexities of a global society.
