MUS 105 Relational Aesthetics Across the Arts

This course examines strategies of performance that blur the author/object/audience divide and stretch conventional notions of spectatorship through immersion and direct engagement. Reading sonic theorists alongside texts on relational aesthetics and the art world’s ‘social turn,’ our aim will be to reimagine sound’s convening power and experiment with new forms of co-presence. Repertoire will be drawn from a range of disciplines and media, including social practice and performance art, immersive theater, and experimental music, with particular focus on the use of live bodies in art world contexts. Coursework will involve weekly reading and student-led discussion experiments as well one, term-length performance project.
