DHYG-250 Dental Hygiene Theory and Clinic IV

Students will utilize experience and opportunities to practice entry-level dental hygiene. Students will perfect clinical skills and prepare for National Board Examination. This course will focus on the transition to dental hygiene practice beyond graduation. Topics will include time management, job interview techniques, resume writing, dental office procedures and management, professionalism, professional organizations, and administration of local anesthesia. Students will conduct oral health services on patient volunteers under direct supervision of a supervisory dentist.

2 hours theory, 12 hours clinical weekly

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Identify barriers for patients with special needs; distinguish between developmental,
    acquired, and age-associated disabilities.
  2. 2. Describe specific needs of patients with specific oral conditions related to specific
    systemic conditions and patients that are homebound, bedridden, or helpless.
  3. 3. Analyze a case study and create a treatment plan using a patient from the clinic.
  4. 4. Demonstrate previously-learned skills and knowledge through completion of the dental
    hygiene portfolio/journal.
  5. 5. List the elements of a complete case presentation; explain the dental hygiene standard of
    care.
  6. 6. Demonstrate advanced dental hygiene instrumentation and patient management skills
    utilizing the more difficult patient.
  7. 7. Demonstrate to competency level the utilization of the ultra-sonic scaling instrument.
  8. 8. Differentiate between abuse and neglect; describe common oral, perioral, and other signs
    of physical abuse.
  9. 9. Explain the legal responsibility of a mandated reporter to report suspected child abuse or
    vulnerable adult abuse, and the procedure to report suspected child abuse, elder abuse, or
    family violence.
  10. 10. Write a personal plan with goals and objectives for career development in dental hygiene.
  11. 11. Identify responsibilities and themes in the dental hygiene code of ethics, and describe the
    legal concepts and theories that apply to dental hygiene practice.
  12. 12. Complete treatment of required patients utilizing all skills to competency (Class I, Class
    II, pediatric, geriatric, periodontal, nutritional counseling).
