GREK-101 Elementary Modern Greek I

In this introductory course, students learn to listen, speak, write, and read at a beginning level. They also learn about the diverse cultures of the Greek-speaking world. Students will become familiar with the Greek script and sound system, develop a working vocabulary, and learn rudimentary grammatical concepts.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Understand and respond in correct Greek to basic questions.
  2. 2. Develop a correct pronunciation and intonation of the language.
  3. 3. Use the following grammar points in both spoken and written Greek:
    A. Regular verbs and their tenses and conjugation.
    B. Definite and indefinite articles with nouns.
    C. The auxiliary verb: ,⊇34∀4
    D. The demonstrative and personal pronoun.
    E. The masculine, feminine and neuter endings in several words.
    F. The interrogative and negative form of the verbs.
    G. The tree genders of the adjectives, the adjective agreement and their comparative and superlative
    degree.
    H. The formation of the plural
    I. The possessive and demonstrative pronoun.
    J. The nominative and accusative case.
    K. The impersonal verb: I like.
    L. The possessive case of masculine, feminine and neuter words.
    M. Verbs in the past tense and simple future.
    N. The active and passive voice.
  4. 4. Use vocabulary to speak about everyday situations, such as family.
  5. 5. Speak about some important elements of Greece.
