HSS 542 Ethics and Professional Orientation of Addiction Counseling

This course is designed to provide an overview of the ethical dimensions and best practices of addictions counseling including related areas of the profession’s Codes of Ethics and legal issues, such as client confidentiality, professional impairment, and scope of practice. Clinical vignettes are utilized for students to practice ethical decision making for addictions counseling. Special populations, such as aging, military, court-involved clients, adolescents, women and underserved populations, will be discussed in terms of ethical, legal, and advocacy implications. Students learn about related licensing certification, professional organizations, and career development opportunities. Additional professional roles and responsibilities for various treatment settings are addressed, including assessment, records management and treatment coordination. Pre-requisite(s): None.
