PT-757 Therap. Exc. for Older Adult

Prerequisite:. Must have clinical experience as a licensed physical therapist. This course presents a process for designing a physical therapist plan of care for the intervention and management of older adults using the principles and techniques of therapeutic exercise. The course will focus on the selection and prescription of appropriate exercise procedures for a variety of diagnosed impairments and activity limitations that are common in older adults. Emphasis will be placed on the practice of these treatment procedures in laboratory sessions. Students will evaluate the results of common assessments used for older adults including fall risk screens, gait speed and walk distance tests, functional mobility and balance assessments. Treatment plans and exercise prescriptions will be developed based on the outcomes of these measures to address and remediate the patient's impairments and functional activity limitations. Focused treatment programs appropriate for persons being managed in home care, outpatient, and community settings will be discussed.
