Social and human service assistants held about 372,700 jobs in 2012. The industries that employed the most social and human services assistants in 2012 were as follows: 
  • Individual and family services (23 percent)
  • State and local government (20 percent)
  • Residential care facilities (16 percent)
  • Community and vocational rehabilitation services (12 percent)
  • Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional, and similar organizations (10 percent)

Employment of social and human service assistants is projected to grow 22 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Growth will be due to an increase in the elderly population and rising demand for health care and social services.
