As the largest healthcare occupation, registered nurses held about 2.9 million jobs in 2017. The industries that employed the most registered nurses in 2017 were as follows:

• Hospitals (30.6 percent)
  
• Nursing care facilities (9.5 percent)
  
• Offices of physicians (7.7 percent)
  
• Home health services (12.8 percent)
  
• Outpatient care center (15 percent)

Employment opportunities are expected to increase by approximately 16 percent from 2014 through 2024.
