FRSC 2100 Fire Administration Management (3-0-3)
This course provides the necessary knowledge and skills for emergency responders to become diverse leaders and managers in their departments. The course starts with the history of the fire service. This component focuses on the historical events that have forged the fire service today. The course includes discussions on preparing for the future in order to aid students in developing a game plan for personal success. Instructors will discuss leadership and management principles in order to blend the academics of leadership and management research into what occurs in the fire service organization on a daily basis. Instructors will also discuss leadership styles in order to help students understand how to lead and manage and why it is done. The course will take an insightful look into how people handle change personally and organizationally. Discussions on ethics will focus on the elements critical to ethical leadership and management practices. The course will explore the elements of team building and provide a depth of understanding on how to blend various styles and personalities to get the most from people. Discussions on managing emergency services will target budgeting and personnel management, which are two support elements that are so vital to every organization. Instructors will also cover the quality of the fire service and discuss various methods of quality improvement and their applications to improving the services delivered to citizens every day. The course includes an in-depth overview of the changes in disaster planning and response and ways to help with community evaluation and preparedness processes. Finally, shaping the future will explore the possibilities of what may occur in the fire service and how program graduates can play an important role in helping to shape the fire service of the future.
