Offered: Typically every Fall Term

This course prepares students to make the instructional and organizational modifications necessary so that children with very different academic, physical, emotional, and social needs can learn in the regular classroom. The focus is on children with a variety of special needs, such as physical and learning exceptionalities (including the gifted); English language learners; lack of readiness for learning; and violent behaviors. Students also will explore related issues, including the need to develop understanding and skills in counseling and conflict resolution, means of closing the achievement gap, the nature of family involvement, and teacher rights and responsibilities in accordance with federal law and related policies. Field experiences in local schools and other community agencies are an integral part of the course. 1 Course Credit
