CFS 142 Exploring Children's Pic Books

This course will explore children’s picture books as artistic as well as literary texts. A major focus will be on the artistic details which help construct the text and assist in the visual telling of a story. While exploring numerous picture books, their histories, their constructions, their illustrators, and their functions, student will critically analyze the illustrations in picture books by using various forms of analyses including visual interpretative analysis. In addition, the students will learn how to help young children explore picture books, enhance children’s development of visual perception, visual literacy, visual storytelling, and help them develop aesthetic appreciation for the art work in picture books. This course content regarding children’s picture books may shift somewhat depending on the skills, interests, and needs of the class. Noncredit for students who completed the course as CFS 186 in the fall 2015 or spring 2016.
