CFS 317 Parent Child Relations

Prerequisite: GSTR 210 and sophomore standing or above or permission of instructor

An intensive study of the nature of parent-child relationships and interactions; parental roles; theories of parenting; and developmental interactions and changes throughout the lifespan will be covered in-depth. Major components of the course will include: cultural, social, and family diversity; family resources; family services; adult and child learning principles; and historical and contemporary parenting in the United States. Students will be introduced to a variety of parenting-education programs and learn strategies for working with parents and topics of interest to parents. A special emphasis will be on researching, reviewing, and critiquing the current scholarly literature related to parent and child interactions and relationships across the lifespan, and educating those who will work with parents in a professional capacity.
