HIS 221 Scribe and Manuscript

An introduction to the role of books and writing in the Middle ages, by examining writing styles, and decorative practices, types of books and documents and their uses, and medieval attitudes about books and writing. Students will learn and use a basic calligraphic hand and some medieval concepts of layout, design, decoration, and produce several pieces of finished work. NOTE: Students will need to purchase specific art supplies; left-handed students need to inform the instructor at registration, so correct supplies are available.
