Applied Science and Mathematics B.A. (Pre-Engineering)

Berea College offers a dual degree program in engineering in cooperation with the University of Kentucky College of Engineering. In this dual degree program, students begin their college careers at Berea by taking three to four years of General Education, science, mathematics, and other course work, then transfer to UK for two or more years of professional engineering education. Successful completion of the program leads to a BA degree from Berea College and a B.S. degree in engineering from the University of Kentucky. The University of Kentucky has programs in biosystems engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, and mining engineering. Although Berea College does not have a special arrangement with any other engineering schools at this time, Berea students have successfully transferred to engineering programs with other universities upon completion of the dual degree requirements, in consultation with the dual degree engineering advisor.

The interdisciplinary Applied Science and Mathematics B.A. is intended for students who plan to transfer to an undergraduate engineering institution through the dual degree program. It is not open to students who will complete their degree requirements at Berea College. Students may apply to the dual degree program from any major, but they must have completed the required core courses in chemistry, physics, and mathematics and meet the minimum GPA requirements to be accepted. Students who are interested in engineering at the graduate level but do not intend to apply to the dual degree program should consider majoring in a related discipline (biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics). Any student who is interested in an eventual career in engineering is encouraged to speak with the Dual Degree Engineering Advisor as early as possible.

Berea’s Dual Degree Engineering Advisor will serve as the student’s primary advisor for this interdisciplinary major.
