HIST-216 History of the Indian Subcontinent

This course will cover the major features of the development of the Indian subcontinent's history from prehistoric times up to the formation of the modern nation states. The course will include a detailed study of the subcontinent's geography and its impact on its various cultures, to include India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. The course will focus on the major historical trends, such as early cultures and civilizations, spread of Buddhism. Hinduism and Islam, early European contacts, impact of neo-imperialism, decolonization following World War II, and the current status of the various nation-states.
