DMSU 101 Introduction to Sonography
This course introduces the diagnostic foundations of diagnostic medical sonography, including medical terminology; scan plane orientations; anatomical relationships; departmental administrative operations; hospital organization; HIPAA regulations; blood and fluid precautions; and basic patient care principles.

Permission of the DMS program chair, BIOL 203,
MATH 138, and PHYS 101

Course Objectives
- Describe the history of ultrasound.
- Demonstrate an understanding of HIPAA regulations, medical ethics, and pertinent legal principles.
- Discuss, interpret, and evaluate personal and medical ethics issues with emphasis on issue recognition, and self-awareness as applicable to ethical interpretations and efficacy in the application of ethical perceptions and concepts.
- Describe hospital organization and departmental administrative operations.
- Compare and contrast the different modalities of radiology.
- Illustrate scan planes, anatomical relationships, and basic technical skills of ultrasound.
- Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate patient care principals, including those with language barriers and cultural differences.
- Identify clinical safety precautions including blood and fluid precautions.
- Demonstrate professionalism.
- Define medical prefixes, suffixes, and terminology pertaining to medical language, especially those used in the field of sonography.
