ENG 21600 Comedy: Its Origin and Development

(GE-Lit/CrsClt) This course investigates the nature of laughter and the function of comedy in society. Lover or scoundrel, the comic hero is the "wise fool" upholding basic human values of mirth and pleasure in a society caught up in its own complacency. Papers and projects may deal with topics such as the Feast of Fools, Mardi Gras, clowns and jesters, vaudeville, and comedians of the silent film.
