HIS 33000 European Intellectual History

Using selections from representative thinkers, this seminar-style course examines their impact on 17th century ideas of reason and the scientific method, and then investigates the impact of these on 18th century ideas of political and social reform and on 19th and 20th century theories of human nature, history, and political systems. These thinkers include Bacon, Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Voltaire, Rousseau, Darwin, Marx, and Freud.
