CSP 40000 Ming and Qing China: 1368-1839

This course will examine the history of China from the beginning of the Ming dynasty to China's first series of wars with Western powers. It will cover aspects of China's dynastic cycles, its attempts to explore and trade with the world, and its enforced isolation. Topics in this course include the treasure fleets and the tributary system, the corruption and decline of the Ming dynasty, the conquest of China by the Manchus, and the flourishing of China's last dynasty, the Qing.
