Clinical Residency in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy
The Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions offers a Clinical Residency in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, credentialed by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE). The one-year residency program provides physical therapy residents with didactic, scholarly, and clinical education opportunities that will improve their ability to integrate scientific knowledge into clinical practice, and will facilitate development of advanced diagnostic, clinical decision-making, and hands-on clinical skills in orthopedic and manual physical therapy. The residency program is structured to meet the Description of Residency Practice that will qualify residents, upon completion of the program, to sit for the APTA’s Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist board-certification examination.
Residents are matched with a clinical partner where, over the year-long program, the resident completes a minimum of 1500 hours of paid clinical practice with a specified mix of orthopedic patients, including at least 150 hours of one-to-one mentoring. The residents also serve as paid laboratory instructors in the University’s DPT program throughout the residency. In addition, residents complete over 300 hours of didactic learning through structured coursework and a minimum of 275 hours of resident-directed learning activities including lab instructing time, mentored research, community outreach, specialty practice observations, and completion of APTA Orthopedic Section independent study courses.
