Introduction
Purpose
National Louis University (NLU) is committed to preparing professionals and engaged citizens. We strive to facilitate learning and develop character, and we expect students to uphold values that advance their communities. The NLU Student Code of Conduct provides a framework to guide the personal conduct of all NLU students as members of an academic and professional community, as students assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the University’s function as an educational institution. As an expression of NLU’s expectations of student conduct, the Code of Conduct facilitates an environment that is safe, welcoming, and supportive of all students meeting their academic and professional goals.
Code of Conduct
NLU students, as members of the academic and University community, are expected to accept and adhere to the standards of personal conduct set forth herein. Students shall:
- Treat all members of the community with courtesy, respect, and dignity, and without favoritism or discrimination.
- Fulfill their obligations through honest and independent effort and integrity in academic and personal conduct.
- Abide by all published University policies, including, but not limited to, those that appear in the University Catalogue, Student Handbook, Residential Life Handbook, Code for Computer Users, student conduct procedures, and class syllabi.
- Treat the physical campus (including buildings, grounds, and furnishings) with respect, and respect the rights and property of other members of the community.
- Respect the prohibition of possession, consumption, distribution, and provision of alcohol on campus, and the illegal possession, use, distribution, and provision of controlled substances.
- Carry no firearms, weapons, or any other item designed to inflict harm or damage on campus. Sworn law enforcement and military officials possessing firearms while on duty may be exempt.
- Display actions and speak words that do not harm others; Refrain from behavior that intentionally or recklessly endangers, threatens, or causes physical or emotional harm to any person, or that intentionally or recklessly causes reasonable apprehension of such harm.
- Behave in a manner that does not intentionally or recklessly interfere with normal University-sponsored activities, including, but not limited to, studying, teaching, research, University administration or fire, police, or emergency services.
- Refrain from conduct that is inconsistent with federal, state or local laws or that is otherwise inconsistent with the best interests of the University.
- Accept responsibility for, and the consequences of, their actions, and promote community safety by encouraging responsible conduct in others.
Furthermore, conduct that disrupts classroom activities and interferes with the educational opportunity of other students will not be tolerated. Examples of this include but are not limited to the following:
- Verbal abuse
- Assault
- Attending class under the influence of alcohol or other drugs
- Bullying in person or via social media
We recognize that in order for students to uphold the standards of conduct, it is deeply important that they commit to a set of values that demonstrate care and compassion for themselves, for others, and for their community. In that vein, we ask students to commit to the following:
- Care for Myself: I promise to strive for excellence in all that I do. I will embrace opportunities for leadership, challenge myself academically, and seek experiences that will positively influence my personal development. I will honor the good in myself by being honest, compassionate, and respectful.
- Care for Others: I promise to recognize that each individual person is valuable and has a unique perspective that contributes to the growth and development of all. I will respect the individuality of others regardless of appearance, ethnicity, faith, gender expression or identity, ability, sexual orientation, or social standing.
- Care for Community: I promise to acknowledge and celebrate diversity. I will contribute my talents, gifts, and ideas to strengthen the community. I aspire to be a person for others committed to working toward a more just world.
It is the hope of our entire university community that students will far exceed these minimum standards for just, respectful, and caring conduct towards one another.
