The Advanced Certificate in Educational Leadership is a fully online program and is open to anyone already possessing teaching certification, a master's degree in education or a related field, and three years of satisfactory teaching or professional experience in a Pre-K-12 setting. This program consists of 30 credit hours of graduate level courses and includes a 600-clock hour internship. The program leads to a recommendation to the New York State Education Department for initial certification as a School Building Leader (SBL) and professional certification as a School District Leader (SDL). Those state certificates allow the candidate to assume such roles as principal, assistant principal, supervisor, or superintendent.
Requirements for Admission to the Advanced Certificate EDUL Program without Deficiencies
- Valid New York State Education Department (NYSED) teaching certification or equivalent
- Master's degree in education or related field with a minimum GPA of 3.0
- 3 years of satisfactory teaching or professional experience in a PreK-12 school or its equivalent
- Evidence of completion of DASA training* for New York State *Applicant may be conditionally accepted pending completion of DASA.
- Two written recommendations, one each from the applicant’s
a) district superintendent or equivalent and
b) principal or immediate supervisor
- Resume
- Letter of intent
- A completed graduate application.
Advising
Graduate students in the Educational Leadership Program will be advised by the EDUL Program Coordinator. They should meet (virtually) with the Coordinator at least once every semester for purposes of program planning and course selection.
Program Requirements
Students may enter the program in Fall, J-Term, Spring, or Summer. EDU 614: Introduction to Educational Leadership is open to prospective students considering enrolling in the program. It is also the prerequisite course for EDUL 615 Operations and Management, EDUL 617 Personnel Leadership, EDUL 618 Instructional Leadership, EDUL 630 School District Leadership, EDUL 640 Internship 1 School Building Internship, and EDUL 641 Internship 2 School District Leadership.
The course work for this program consists of 30-credit hours: 10 courses, each with 3 credits and all conducted online. Candidates should consult with their advisor, the Program Coordinator, to plan their schedules.

Candidates are also required to submit an internship portfolio providing evidence of the candidate's impact on students in a Pre-K-12 setting.
As of December 31, 2013, candidates in all education programs are required to complete training under the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA). Those entering the program without the DASA requirement may take EDU 303.
Candidates must also successfully pass a comprehensive oral or written examination and the New York State School Building Leadership Examination. In order to be eligible for New York State School Building Leader Initial Certification, candidates must pass the applicable state examinations.
