SUNY Fredonia’s School of Music cultivates humanity, skills, and creativity to impact our communities as we craft meaningful, balanced lives in a rapidly changing world. We accomplish this work guided by seven values:
Belonging: We strive to create a place where everyone is accepted for who they are and choose to be.
Collaborating: We engage with others in creative, cooperative ways by listening and communicating as we work toward our goals.
Creating: We bring new ideas to life: on the stage, in the classroom, in our communities, in our world.
Cultivating: We provide education and opportunities to equip our students to reach their highest potential along their chosen path.
Evolving: We continually reflect and adapt to meet changing needs and articulated goals of our learning communities.
Learning By Doing: We engage in experiential opportunities that connect artistic and scholarly practices, liberal arts-based inquiry, and professional preparation.
Wellbeing: We actively pursue holistic wellbeing and fulfillment by working to identify, establish, and maintain healthy balances and boundaries.
SUNY Fredonia is internationally recognized for its undergraduate and graduate music programs. It provides the foundation of outstanding musicianship for all music majors and enriches the cultural life of the campus and community. In an environment oriented to the individual, it endeavors to create musicians who will assume vigorous roles as leaders and participants in significant musical experiences.
An audition is required for admission to a degree program in the School of Music. All first-year students have essentially the same course work, and specialization increases in each subsequent year of study.
All students pursuing a degree program in the School of Music take private lessons on their principal instrument (Applied Music) and will be involved in ensembles.
Statement on Applied Study: A grade of "F" in any semester of private applied study or a grade of "D" in two consecutive semesters of private applied study will result in the removal of the student from the School of Music curriculum.
Statement on Accreditation: The State University of New York at Fredonia is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), and the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).
