MUS 239 Popular Culture & World Music
In this course, we explore various contemporary music genres rooted in different cultural groups through a theoretical lens derived from popular cultural studies. We examine musical creativity and cultural industry as social manifestations interwoven into the changing political environments of the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries. We discuss the most prominent popular musical genres by answering analytical questions which will help students gain a deeper understanding of popular music and popular culture while enriching their aesthetic experiences and strengthen their critical thinking.
