Pre-Law
Students hoping to attend law school should focus on two main areas during their undergraduate program: academic performance and standardized test preparation. While maintaining a strong GPA is important, it's crucial to understand that different law schools have varying criteria for admission. Although it is not unusual for programs to prefer applicants with GPAs of 3.25 or higher, others may have different standards.
Additionally, while the LSAT remains a significant component of the admission process for many law schools, some institutions are beginning to de-emphasize or even eliminate the LSAT requirement. Therefore, it's essential for students to research the specific requirements of the law schools they are interested in.
If students elect to take the LSAT, to enhance their law school applications, students should consider doing so during their junior year. This timing allows for the possibility of retaking the test if needed before applying in their senior year. Engaging in LSAT practice tests can also be highly beneficial.
UMHB’s pre-law program is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become competitive law school applicants. Courses in various disciplines, including English and History are recommended to strengthen critical thinking, writing, and analytical skills, all of which are essential for success in law school. Students are encouraged to talk to their advisor and other faculty members to determine the best path to reach their desired outcomes.
