SOWK 527 Substance Use Disorders and Recovery

This course is a comprehensive overview of the basic aspects of substance use disorders. Students will learn about etiology (origin), epidemiology (incidence and prevalence), intervention and treatment options, basic screening and assessment tools, and early intervention methods for treating substance use disorders. Perspectives incorporated into the course will include the biological, psychological, social and cultural factors involved in drug dependency. By the end of this course, students will have the knowledge and basic skills needed to recognize and understand chemical dependency and the impact it has on the lives of individuals.
