Themes include: race, gender and ethnicity in the construction of identity; cultural variations among Mexicans; rural and urban views of the nation.

Focusing on how literature helped shape the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from Islamic rule, among other topics, the course complements SPN 485.
