Communication

Nancy Semotiuk, Chair, Linda Potter Crumley, Lynelle Ellis.

At its foundation, communication is about how we use messages to create meaning in different situations. The discipline studies how people interact, communicate, and influence each other in society, and it explores the artistic and creative aspects of communication. It's a field that looks at how we communicate across multiple media platforms—whether that’s through speech, writing, or creating digital media content—and examines the impact it has.

The Department of Communication ensures that students possess the technical, analytical and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in the highly competitive and dynamic field of professional communication, becoming effective and articulate Christian communicators. Students are prepared for both successful careers and graduate school.

For students interested in treating communication disorders, we offer an AS degree in Pre-Speech Language Pathology that prepares students to seek admission to a professional program in Speech Language Pathology.

Degrees Offered:

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Digital Communication provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to create various forms of digital media content. This field includes a wide range of media types including video, audio, and interactive media for broadcast, streaming, online content, and corporate communication. Potential career paths for graduates with a BA in Digital Communication include video production, broadcast television, corporate communication, and content creation for online platforms. Graduates of this program are prepared for graduate study as well.

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in International Communication integrates knowledge of communication with language study abroad, an international internship, and a minor. With experience in international communication, graduates are prepared for careers in communication in international and intercultural organizations such as global business, governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), charitable or religious organizations, foundations, media outlets, and international missions, making them an essential asset in an ever-connected world. They are prepared for graduate study as well.

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Strategic Communication opens the door to a wide variety of employment opportunities in corporate, government, and nonprofit organizations. Strategic Communication is an umbrella term to describe a discipline that includes media management, public relations, and advertising. A minor is required. Graduates often take positions as public relations practitioners, brand strategists, communication specialists, or social media managers, fundraisers, editors, and writers. They are prepared for graduate study as well.

Bachelor of Music (BMus) in Music Production is an interdisciplinary major between the Music and Communication departments. It prepares students for jobs within music production and related media industries including music production recording, mixing, mastering, sound design, and scoring.

Associate of Science (AS) in Pre-Speech Language Pathology prepares students for admission to Speech Language Pathology at Loma Linda University and may also apply to other professional programs. A selective program involving sciences, general education courses, and communication-specific coursework offers graduation with an AS degree before entering BS professional training elsewhere.

Department minors are available in drama, media and production ministry, international communication, journalism, and speech.
