PHY 335 Physical Optics

Prerequisites: PHY 222 or permission of instructor; AND MAT 225

An introduction to optical science, including geometrical and physical optics. Topics include the propagation and measurement of light; geometric optics (Fermat's principle, Snell's law, thin and thick lenses, ray tracing and optical instrumentation); and wave optics (polarization, coherence, diffraction gratings, and interferometry). This is an intermediate Optics course with emphasis on applying theoretical principles in a hands-on setting. Three one-hour lectures and one two-hour laboratory session each week.
