PSYC-900 Multicultural Psychology

Multicultural Psychology introduces students to multicultural populations and related contemporary issues in the United States. A thorough and comprehensive examination of racial, ethnic and emergent cultural groupings is presented, as well as similarities and differences between and within existing groups. Topics discussed include acculturation patterns, poverty and economic concerns, history of oppression, prejudice and discrimination, sociopolitical factors, religious practices, and other cultural values and attitudes that affect the various cultural groups. By stimulating an awareness of, and sensitivity to, variations in values, cultural dynamics and interactional patterns, the course aims to foster greater understanding and appreciation of differences among groups. This understanding will promote the formation of more positive and enduring bonds between members of diverse groups in the national society.
