ENGL-084 Academic Intermediate Writing and Grammar for ESL Students

In this course, students will acquire the English language skills needed to produce paragraphs at an intermediate proficiency level. A variety of reading selections and discussion activities will serve to prepare students to compose narrative, descriptive and expository paragraphs that reflect critical analysis. Writing themes will help students to develop a global awareness. Paragraph development will progress to the production of an organized essay by the end of the semester. Grammatical skills will be developed through formal instruction, group editing and computer-assisted instruction.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Develop from paragraph to essay composition using a variety of styles, such as narrative, descriptive and
    expository.
  2. 2. Utilize the writing process to generate, organize, and develop ideas.
  3. 3. Write summaries that capture the main ideas of a reading selection.
  4. 4. Write compositions that reflect critical analysis, and are focused on a main idea that is developed with
    supporting information.
  5. 5. Write conclusions that bring a composition to an end.

  6. 6. Use the rules of English grammar and mechanics to write correctly structured sentences.

  7. 7. Use a variety of basic verb forms.
  8. 8. Edit and revise their own writing and that of their classmates.
