FILM-108 The Golden Age of Hollywood

This course will explore the classic Hollywood films of the 1930s and 1940s. This course will introduce the most popular narrative tendencies and film genres that were developed during the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema, from the rise and fall of the major classical Hollywood studios, to the definition of the key characteristics of seamless storytelling and the basic mode of film production used during this period. Major films and significant directors from this period will be viewed and discussed.

  1. 1. Develop a general knowledge of the classic Hollywood film style of the 1930s and 1940s.
  2. 2. Identify running themes from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
  3. 3. Compare the various directorial styles used in the comedies of the 1930s and 1940s.
  4. 4. Analyze the use of lighting and the seamless style of editing of this period.
  5. 5. Distinguish different cinematic styles and genres based on the cultural models created throughout the
    post-war period of this era.
  6. 6. Discuss the styles of the most important and influential Hollywood directors.
  7. 7. Compare and contrast films and literary works from this area and place them in their cultural setting.
