DMSU 151 Clinical Sonography I

This course is the student's first clinical education rotation. Students will be trained in the day-to-day operations of an ultrasound lab. Students will have the opportunity to observe experienced technologists and develop scanning skills in the clinical setting. Attendance at an assigned clinical affiliate for 8 hours per week is required.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Prepare the patient for the sonographic examination based upon the appropriate specialty.
  2. 2. Prepare the exam room for the sonographic examination based upon the appropriate specialty.
  3. 3. Using proper technique, perform the sonographic examination of appropriate specialty.
  4. 4. Recognize normal and abnormal echogenicity of soft tissue structures.
  5. 5. Identify spatial relations on the sonogram: anterior, posterior, superior, inferior, left and right, etc.
  6. 6. Select the proper transducer for the exam and patient body habitus.
  7. 7. Optimize the ultrasound image through proper use of instrumentation.
  8. 8. Adhere to ultrasound department protocol.
  9. 9. Abstract pertinent information from the patient chart.
  10. 10. Identify patient care skills.
  11. 11. Define the requisition to determine the area of interest.
  12. 12. Follow department procedure for permanent image acquisition (PACS, hard copy storage, etc.).
