EDUC 292 Special Education Methods 6th-12th Grade

This course presents current practices in teaching students with special needs in grades 6 through 12. Students will review/demonstrate a variety of teaching techniques in the areas of functional skills, managing the learning environment, reading, writing, mathematics, and the content areas. Special focus is placed on transition education and services for adolescents. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Curriculum and Methodology of Instruction requirement for an initial certificate in Generic Special Education Secondary/Adult.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. List and describe instructional methods for secondary learners with special needs
  2. 2. Explain the purpose of and how to perform assessments for placement and instruction of
    students with special needs
  3. 3. Describe methods of managing the learning environment.
  4. 4. List and explain methods of instruction in basic and functional skills.
  5. 5. List and define the service models proposed for comprehensive transition education.
  6. 6. Explain the legislation and services guidelines associated with secondary and transition
    education.
  7. 7. Describe how students and their families are key participants in high school programs for
    students with special needs.
  8. 8. Explain how and why to perform a transition assessment.
  9. 9. Explain the processes of transitioning to employment, post-secondary education and/or
    adult independent and interdependent living.
  10. 10. Describe the connections needed between school-based and community resources.
  11. 11. Explain a variety of issues in the delivery of transition education and services.
